Tonic Oxford Box Book - Keren Baker

Tonic have just bought out a really wonderful die set that is so much more than just a box; the potential is enormous! It’s called the Oxford Box and includes a die that has the outer shape and lots of inner decorative dies plus the dies for creating the tabbed inner files too.

I decided to create a double sided book for holding lists and jottings in

Here’s how I created it. I’ve used mountboard for the outside as because I’ve created removable signatures, I thought I’d make it out of something a bit more sturdy. The dies are not designed for mountboard but are good quality enough that if you’re careful with your die-cut sandwich, you can get a decent partial cut and score.

I’ve cut off the side and tabs so you’re just left with 2 x 3 sectioned pieces. They need decorative papers so I chose the beautiful Live More papers from Pinkfresh Studio

Before adding the paper, however, you need to fold the sections. I embossed the score lines deeply with an embossing tool and arranged the pieces as the photo above and then attached the overlapped parts with strong adhesive tape.

To add the signatures ( which is book speak for the folded sections of pages that are glued together in the books), I tightly attached some elastic by pulling it really taut and knotting it. This is where the pages are slotted into and means I can add more once I’ve used them up.

I cut several layers of graph paper, roughly the width of half the book and just under the height. Fold them well with an embossing tool and using a pricking tool, then make 3 equally spaced holes in the fold. Then sew. It’s a case of coming up through the centre ( leaving a tail of thread), down through the left hole, up through the right hand hole and then down through the centre one again and tie the two ends tightly.

That’s it!

Next is just decoration and making 3 more signatures that slot over the 4 lots of elastic that I put onto the back of the book.

The ribbon threading die cut piece is from one of the accompanying die sets that go with the Oxford Box and are currently available as a I complete set on Hochanda and will be available separately soon
The stamped decorative elements are heat embossed in Cool Jade embossing powder with Delicate Details Vine Tag and Flourish & Henna Tag & Flourish stamp sets. The colouring is using Nuvo Aqua Flow pens .

To keep the book closed, I created an elasticated band, sandwiched between a layer of cardstock and patterned paper using the shaped die from the set

When you view the book from the top- this is what the note pages look like

I decorated the back too. I can’t wait to use it- I think you’ll agree that this is a really innovative die

Hope you’re having a lovely day and I’ll be back soon! x
